We are very happy to announce that the winner of RSDS’ first video competition has been decided! Huge congratulations to Matthias Lebo who has won...
a free stay in one of the RSDS villages, plus a copy of Jeff Goodman’s ‘Guide to Underwater Wildlife Video & Editing’ with his video entitled ‘Saving the Red Sea’.
Jeff Goodman, our videography workshop leader, watched all the entries closely and offered these valuable comments for those who entered, and those who are considering entering the next competition:
“A great effort by all and I think all entrants should be proud of their efforts. There are however a few things that may help those who enter the next competition.
Generally all the films were too long. Although there were some really nice images they were spoilt by putting them next to poor ones that had a variety of issues. Subject too far from camera, out of focus, poor colour saturation. Music was usually good but became very repetitive if the film lasted more than 3 minutes.
Matthias's film stood out from the others in a couple of ways. There were good graphics in the beginning as an introduction and the music was emotive. The images were cut nicely with the music and were steady and of good quality. There was a good message to the film. The only negative is that I felt it to be a little bit too long. It would have made a much better 3.5minute film. Finally, and this is a personal thing, I think a little amount of narration would have taken the film to another level.”
You can watch all the entries for the July 31st deadline here. Thank you to everyone who took part and well done!
We have already received two entries for our December 31st competition deadline (watch them here). If you would like to take part, please visit the Video Competition Page on our website, for further details. We would encourage all applicants to read the guidelines carefully before entering.
