From Paul Duxfield, our competition judge:
'When I open these pictures in my browser from the links that the good folks at RSDS send me I do so with much anticipation and genuine fun.
And as I’m judging these in December - and sorry for the delays folks, my bad - it reminds me a little of opening my Xmas advent calendar, such is the feeling it brings to me.
So I was very excited to come face to face with Ahmed Habibs lovely portrait of an Oceanic White Tip, leaping out of the screen.
Next I clicked upon was Zsoldos Istvans equally impressive beautifully composed Turtle picture, I like how it is carefully isolated from the reef against the blue water.
So often these pictures can be slightly marked down because the subject is clashing too much with the foreground, so worth keeping in mind.
Next was a beautiful coral reef shot from Gennady Elfimov which is hugely enhanced by the reflection from a calm surface. Incorporating the surface in your pictures can really add to the impact of the shot.
Then there was the colour splash of Wael’s bright red starfish.
But it’s not always the colourful or exciting subjects that can attract your attention, and I really loved Paul Eijkemans enigmatic, carefully exposed cave picture with a diver just being illuminated by a shaft of light.
Next up was Konrad Muschg’ picture of a Dugong breaking the surface and making a reflection, the detail on its skin really shows how these creatures can pick up cuts and scars in their daily lives, I like the angle on this shot
it’s quite brave compositionally to force a diagonal like this.
And an atmospheric pair of turtles from Robert Paauw making their way along the reef, always good to frame from below as it adds drama to the shot.
and finally Anna Lindströms lovely little Picasso Triggerfish for an always welcome dose of cuteness overload.
So it was a lot of fun as always but difficult to choose as always, so my decision this month after a lot of deliberation is Zsoldos’ careful and well thought out framing of the turtle on the reef, well lit and framed, lovely shot.
Well done.'
