We are happy to announce that the winner of the RSDS Photo Competition for February has been chosen. Congratulations to Lewis Jefferies with his photo "Heart of the Red Sea".
Lewis wins a free stay at the RSDS village of his choice. You can view the winning photo, and all the February participants here.
If you would like a chance to win, simply register on our website and upload your photos from our competition page. Each day we choose a 'photo of the day' from the selection of entries. Registered users of our website can give all the photos a star rating. At the end of the month our Photo Pro and photography workshop leader, Paul ‘Duxy’ Duxfield, looks at the votes and chooses a winner from the highest scoring photos. Full terms and conditions and prize details are available here.
Congratulations again to Lewis, and good luck to all those participating in 2019!
Paul Duxfield, our competition judge:
What a difficult month!
Very high standard of entries, so quite a task to choose a favourite one.
And it was a case of heart ruling mind for my first impression.
I normally open the shots on my browser, and then my first impression and emotional response to the entries is noted but not immediately acted upon.
And then im normally left with a couple that have dominated my attention.
In this case it was Mark Weston’s close up of a Moray that was chock full of personality, alongside Lewis Jeffries technically and artistically impressive shot of the Indian Mackerel that Shagra and Nakari are famed for.
Really difficult in all honesty and in the end I have to give it to the Indian Mackerel shot as it just edges it with the technical skill, but if ever there was a situation for a joint first winner it’d have to include the Moray shot which breaks a lot of rules, ie no eye focus, and overexposed background, but the sheer personality of the shot elevates it above its technical limitations, so well done Lewis Jefferies for a cracking picture, but equally well done Mark for the Moray which stole my heart this time.
Duxy ran escorted photo workshops in Marsa Shagra in 2017 and 2018. These workshops are designed for camera users of all experience levels, with any type of underwater camera. Duxy is on hand to share tips and information, troubleshoot individual photography issues, escort early morning and late afternoon dives, and give talks on specific subjects. The 2019 Red Sea Photo Camp with Duxy and Alphamarine Photography will be in Shagra from June 11-22 - full information.
