We are happy to announce that the winner of the RSDS Photo Competition for May 2024 has been chosen. Congratulations to Andy Willett with his photo "Dolphin Experience".
Andy wins a free stay at the RSDS village of his choice. You can view the winning photo, and all the May participants here.
If you would like a chance to win, simply register on our website and upload your photos from our competition page. Each day we choose a 'photo of the day' from the selection of entries. Anyone can register on our website and vote on photos entered into the competition. At the end of the month our Photo Pro and photography workshop leader, Paul ‘Duxy’ Duxfield, looks at the votes and chooses a winner from the highest scoring photos. Full terms and conditions and prize details are available here.
Congratulations again to Andy, and good luck to all those participating in the coming months!
From Paul Duxfield, our competition judge:
This month was much easier , no difficult decisions, as after the first pass in my opinion there was a very clear winner.
Thats not to say that the others were poor, in fact without the clear choice it would have been difficult in all honesty.
One of the last ones that I saw was one of my favourites but it was just let down by being ever so slightly out of focus on the eyes of the creature, a shame, and maybe a run through Topaz Sharpen would have made this a definite contender.
I’m talking about Ruth Wanger’s otherwise superb shot of a Coral Blenny peeking out over the coral, perfectly framed and lit, and like I was talking about last month jam packed with personality.
Ryan Stalker’s use of background and diagonal framing definitely worthy of a mention of the delicately coloured goby.
Anders’s turtle, Gina’s Trevally hunting Barracudas and Peter Toth’s trio of BatFish also top notch.
Ultimately though there was only going to be one winner and whilst it didn't get the lions share of the public votes it did score the highest amongst the public vote.
And deservedly so.
Well done Andy Willett an amazing Dolphin shot, nicely framed and with a snorkeller in the frame to give the picture some scale.
Just the sort of shot that I think gives the right impression of the Red Sea and the marvellous things that you can witness here.
