From Paul Duxfield, our competition judge:
March was an unusual month with a real cross section of choices but I managed to narrow it down a bit in the first pass to a difficult five selections.
There were two black and white shots, both very different apart from the absence of colour. And two fabulous examples of exactly the same subject but shot in unique ways.
Along with a great fish group portrait to add to the mix and make my job even harder!
The two black and whites were great examples of where the simplified tonal range meant you had to take notice of the compositions even more closely.
Eventually after much deliberation, and whilst I thought the reef scene was very dramatic by Jannick Joly, I felt that the eye contact of the child in Tibor Ban’s situational portrait made the stronger statement overall.
And then there was by colourful contrast the pair of Pyjama Slug macro pictures both great examples of this popular subject matter but in the end I felt that the shot by Laszlo Maraczi was a bit more colourful and used the negative space of the red sponge really well, even though Jan Leya’s closer framing was very engaging.
And then there was the other shot by Laszlo of a grouping of red Soldier Fish which had the classic Red Sea combination of red against blue, and with them all facing the camera too, which is always a bonus.
So all of these pictures have great merit in their own way, but I know I’m only allowed to pick the one, so I feel the strongest of this months is the Pyjama Slug by Laszlo, which has negative space, diagonals, and colour contrast all in its favour which has made for a compositional tour de force, and so this is my final choice.
