We are happy to announce that the winner of the RSDS Photo Competition for September 2023 has been chosen. Congratulations to Pamela Fischer with her photo "Shrimp".
Pamela wins a free stay at the RSDS village of her choice. You can view the winning photo, and all the September participants here.
If you would like a chance to win, simply register on our website and upload your photos from our competition page. Each day we choose a 'photo of the day' from the selection of entries. Anyone can register on our website and vote on photos entered into the competition. At the end of the month our Photo Pro and photography workshop leader, Paul ‘Duxy’ Duxfield, looks at the votes and chooses a winner from the highest scoring photos. Full terms and conditions and prize details are available here.
Congratulations again to Pamela, and good luck to all those participating in the coming months!
From Paul Duxfield, our competition judge:
Some months this task is easier than others as there’s often a stand out winner from the start, but then I’m reviewing this months and you’ve all excelled yourselves as the standard is pretty high across the board. We’ve got a great selection of macro and wideangle this month.
With Jane Morgan’s and Pamela Fischer’s studies of individual shrimp catching my attention.
Jane’s shot of a Periclemines shrimp against what I’m guessing is the bright red body of a Spanish Dancer nudibranch is very striking. As is Pamela’s shot of her shrimp against a black background, both shots an exercise in compositional simplicity using the diagonals to good effect.
In the wideangle camp we’ve got an excellent head on shot of a pod of dolphins rushing towards the camera, by Ines Goovaerts, and a lovely sunbeamy picture of a turtle by Christian Horras. Shot’s that really showcase what a fabulous base that the RSDS camps are in accessing dive sites like Dolphin House and Marsa Abu Dabab.
Then there’s a lovely behavioural but also cute shot of a pair of Morays in black and white by Rudolf Gonda.
All the other shots were strong in their own way too.
In the end though and whilst I’d like to have a four way tie for the main prize, I’m opting for Pamela Fischers shrimp as the main winner this month. Well done against some very stiff competition.
Don’t forget that I’m running Fotofest 24 at Marsa Nakari next year, in conjunction with Sarah O’Gorman, for six days of talks, photo clinics and many chances to get underwater photography help and one to one tuition from the 15-20th June here’s the link for further details and to book yourself a place.
It’d be great to see you there in June 2024.
