From Paul Duxfield, our competition judge:
This month was a straight choice between two front runners.
As always we had a lot of great entries but in the end for me it came down to a choice between a challenging technical shot balancing light, and a head on encounter with an apex predator and entourage.
So the technically more challenging of the two shots for me was the composition of the diver, the lionfish and the spectacular sun ball in the background by Michael Tonsing.
Whilst the subject matter of the lionfish is very commonplace in the Red Sea this doesn't take anything away from the well composed trio of picture elements.
Also quite a challenge when facing sunwards to get the beams of light looking like this and the foreground and background exposure well balanced.
I know that this picture took a bit of photographic know how and experience, so much kudos for that.
The other shot which couldn't fail to grab my attention was the exciting picture of an Oceanic White Tip, always a thrill to see and get so close to, a visceral experience that makes you feel alive.
Whilst not as technically challenging as the other shot, it cant fail to grab the viewers attention, and is testament to the fact that just because one shot was harder to take isn't neccessarily the reason to pick one over the other
in the end it has to be dynamic and tell a story.
So with all these factors coming into play in the end I’ve gone with Nour’s shot of the OWT, with a very strong commendation and commiserations to Michael’s very close runner up of the diver and lionfish.
Well done Nour, great shot.
