From Paul Duxfield, our competition judge:
My July choice is all about simplicity, and eye contact.
Eye contact with fish portraiture can really elevate a picture from the mundane to the impressive.
And the picture that I have chosen this month is all about this, a simple uncluttered composition and lots of eye contact with the clown fish.
Beautifully positioned and perfectly in focus with both eyes of the fish in view looking straight ahead at the camera lens. Getting eye focus isn't always an easy task, especially with a fish that is usually darting around in and out of the frame so patience is what is needed, and you’ll often end up with lots of shots that just aren't quite there.
So it would be remiss of me not to give a very special mention to the equally well executed, carefully framed shot by Laszlo Maraczi of a pair of clown fish, that he’s managed to achieve both pairs of eyes in focus.
For those of you that have experience of trying to do this, I’m sure you’re well aware of just how much patience is needed with these popular but tricky creatures.
So once again it was a tricky decision, but in the end I opted for the simpler shot by Jan Leya, which is also a perfect example of the ‘less is more’ principle.
This shot has both eyes of the single well framed clown fish, just positioned on the thirds line on the right, both looking directly at the photographer.
Great shot, well done Jan.
Well done to all the entrants to the competition, whilst I moan and complain about the difficulties I face choosing these pictures, I love this task.
I’d also love to see some of you at the Red Sea Photo Camp this November/December as I’d also like to give honest appraisals first hand and meet some of you face to face
and maybe go for a dive together :)
