From Paul Duxfield, our competition judge:
Wow! It was something of a macrofest this January with the close up entries dominating the choices, however the wide angle shots we got were also very good with a couple of great turtle pics from Ruth and Anders that are definitely worth mentioning, and the classical Red Sea shot from Paul Pettit of possibly my favourite reef in the area, Habili Nakari, the colours and sheer numbers of fish mark this out as a great shot and fabulous place to visit if you’re diving around this location. However whilst I personally usually favour a good wide angle shot over macro, the close up contenders this month were just too good to forsake. Initially catching my eye is a cracking shot by Eric Besnard of a resting shrimp, beautifully captured and sharp, draped languidly over the tentacle of an anemone. And then a lovely colourful Xmas Tree worm, placed within a bokehlicious background (bokehlicious is a word I’ve invented to mean nicely blurry LOL). The abstract swirly pattern of Guilhem’s Giant Clam is absolutely gorgeous and just the sort of unusual shot I like, and then Thomas Bolle’s fish portrait of a a head on Coral Grouper ticks all the boxes too. So a very difficult call in all honesty, but after much deliberation i’m settled on the first shot that took my attention, the resting shrimp by Eric Besnard. Simple, well composed but with personality and all the aspects of the picture drawing the viewer into the centre of the frame, beautiful well done Eric, and particularly in such a strong month too.
