From Paul Duxfield, our competition judge:
Wow! what a selection of fabulous shots to end the difficult year of 2021, hopefully reminding us all that there’s good times ahead and our troubled world can start to reach some sort of equilibrium again, and that we can get back to doing what we love. More than a couple of shots grabbed my gaze and demanded my attention for this end of year selection. Jacek Grazyk’ picture of the bow of a wreck reminds us of the passing of time with the coral growth front and centre in the frame. Also the timing was cruel for Klas Malmberg as his Oceanic White Tip would have been a front runner last month, lovely shot and very dynamic. I really loved Petr Bazant’s shot of a night dive squid, very colourful.
Alison Pettitt’s Green Turtle demonstrates great patience, waiting for the two attendant pilot fish to be perfectly placed, also good to see it in motion hovering a few centimetres above the sea grass that it’s no doubt surveying for a snack.
My final two favourites in this selection are Alex Tattersall’s beautifully compositionally balanced picture of a magnificent anemone and its resident clownfish, the other shot I loved is Sibylle Malinke’s dramatic action shot of a snorkeller and dolphins.
Sibylle’s picture is full of action and drama with the creatures having enough space to move in the frame, the solitary human balancing up the wild animal action being witnessed, she’s obviously waited for the dolphins to reach just the right position in the shot, which shows great, in the moment skill and presence of mind, when exciting things are happening all around you. Alex’s shot though shows a different type of compositional patience not seen in a fleeting moment.
I like the way the bright red anemone in Alex’s image counterpoints the yellow clown fish, which in itself may not have been enough but the smaller fish grouped with none overlapping one another and all looking in the same direction, tells me that he probably waited a while for this composition to fall into place, and this is why I have to pick this shot as the end of year winner for 2021 although it was as usual a very close thing, fantastic shot Alex great stuff.
