From Paul Duxfield, our competition judge:
Hello again people. August’s competition is a very good example of persistence paying off.
However just because you enter the competition many times it wont guarantee you a winning place automatically. The shot still has to be strong, correctly exposed, focused and composed well.
There were a few pictures that caught my attention, the black and white conversion of Trevally hunting across, what i’m assuming, is a late afternoon reefscape with the other reef fish no doubt terrified by this voracious predator. This was captured by Christine Fawzy.
Jay Christopher’s picture of clown fish in an anemone is a cracking shot too, with the lovely blue of the water contrasting the colourful bottom two thirds with fish against the anemone.
in the end though I have chosen regular entrant Keith Sheldon’s head on shot of a Blue Spotted Ray. Patience and slow considerate diving is needed to get pictures of most reef fish, as they’re easily spooked by the clumsier diver, so Keith has clearly gone slowly and got down to the rays level to maintain eye contact, the curl of its fin tips also add to this picture and give it some symmetry as well, so well done Keith proving that a good shot of a common creature is always going to win out over a mediocre shot of a more glamourous fish.
