Red Sea Sharks Workshop

Red Sea Sharks Workshop

Red Sea Diving Safari teamed up with Dr. Elke Bojanowski of Red Sea Sharks to offer this workshop for the first time in 2014. Following its success we will be continuing this collaboration.

Learn about shark behaviour and biology from an expert, and dive the world famous Elphinstone reef to be in with a chance to see sharks up close and personal.

The Red Sea Sharks workshop is aimed at divers interested in learning about different aspects of sharks, their biology and conservation. Focus is on the more common Red Sea shark species and the research projects conducted under the umbrella of the Red Sea Sharks (www.redseasharks.org) trust.

2018 Schedule:
Day 1 (9th Oct.): Evening Presentation (Intro to Red Sea Sharks, their biology, how to identify & dive with them)
Day 2 (10th Oct.): Two morning dives in Elphinstone & evening presentation (Shark behaviour & interactions with humans)
Day 3 (11th Oct.): Two morning dives in Elphinstone & final evening presentation (Shark conservation & research)
Day 4 (12th Oct.): Optional additional two dives in Elphinstone*

Daily trips to Elphinstone will be conducted (weather permitting) by day boat (min. 10 guests required) or by speedboat (less than 10 guests). On the day boat lunch will be provided between the dives and we will return to Marsa Shagra at approximately 2:30PM. By speedboat we will have a surface interval on the speedboat with light refreshments between the dives, returning to Marsa Shagra in time for lunch. In both cases there will be time to dive the house reef in the afternoon.

Those who wish to dive in Elphinstone must hold a minimum of 50 dives, and PADI AOWD or CMAS 2** qualification. Guests who are not certified to dive Elphinstone but who wish to join the workshop should contact us to make special arrangements to join only the evening presentations.

The workshop will be held by biologist Dr. Elke Bojanowski, who has been conducting shark research in Egypt since October 2004. Her research focuses on photo-identification studies of local shark populations, mainly oceanic white-tip sharks, but also grey reef and silky sharks. Additionally a general shark monitoring project has been carried out since 2010.
